Charlie Norman opened Norman Tire Center on Gentry Parkway in 1976. There, he built his business from the ground up by truly caring for the people he served.
Mr. Norman was the kind of guy you’d send your mom, wife, or daughter to for courteous and dependable tire service at a decent price.
He became known in the community for his kindness to customers. It wasn’t uncommon for him to “squeeze you in,” to offer a discount, to extend a payment deadline, or even to perform a needed car repair for nothing more than a promise to come back or to refer a friend.
Over the years, Norman Tire Center began offering other vehicle repair and maintenance services. It wasn’t a full-service automotive repair shop, but it was making strides in that direction.
In the early 2000s, Mario Martinez was a busy working man. He needed an expensive car repair, and he needed it done quickly so he could get back to work fast. A co-worker referred him to Norman Tire Service in Tyler where he received quality service at a reasonable price.
Mr. Norman got him on the rack and back on the road in no time. And charged a whole lot less.
From that experience, a friendship developed between the two businessmen—one that would change the course of the business.
After serving the good people of Tyler for over forty years, Mr. Norman began to think about retirement. But he couldn’t leave his friends and neighbors without the dependable service they counted on.
By that time, the community had become more diverse, and many customers spoke Spanish primarily.
Mr. Norman thought long and hard about who he could trust to carry on his family business. Who would care for the people of the community as much as he did?
After much consideration, he asked his friend Mario Martinez to purchase the property and the name—a name that had become synonymous with quality service.
In 2020, Mr. Martinez took ownership of the shop. He painted the building bright blue and renamed it Norman Automotive and Tire Center to reflect the company’s growing automotive repair and maintenance capabilities.
Mr. Norman continued to run the office until his wife made him come home during the Covid pandemic. The transition was so seamless that few in the community recognized the change.
Sadly, Mr. Charlie Norman passed away in 2023. But his legacy lives on at Norman Automotive and Tire Center and in the service Mario Martinez provides his customers today.
